The Tories are playing their part with relish and aplomb. Short of randomly selecting some child from a council estate and ripping out its heart and eating it on the doorstep of Number 10, David Cameron has declared naked class war as helpfully as any revolutionary socialist could reasonably ask.*
Until they actually start disappearing activists out over the North Sea in their Sea King helicopters, this is as brazen as the British Establishment is going to get.
So where is the left? Why isn’t it growing exponentially?
Could it be that the population believes that there is no alternative?
Could it be they have no faith in the institutions of the left (the unions, the NGOs, the marches, the sage-on-the-stage meetings in the Friends Meeting Houses up and down the country).
It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, of course, but really, can you blame folks for thinking “we’re fucked and there’s no point caring?”
What has the left done lately to earn the time, attention, energy and cash of the “masses”? Eh?

* The Tories remind me of the climax of gruesome film “In the Company of Men.” Aaron Eckhart plays a man who has set up a competition as to who can make a vulnerable woman fall in love. When the chosen victim asks if it is indeed a competition, he begins by denying it. Then he decides that he’s only in town another week, and he can’t muster the energy to lie anymore, so tells her the unbearable truth.)
