That word responsibility

The word “responsibility” really does work very hard, doesn’t it?

“People should take responsibility for their actions” is the unobjectionable phrase. But often, in the hands of even decent, well-intentioned people this seems to come to mean “benefits should be cut!” (Because there is SO MUCH fraud. It’s in the Daily Mail, it must be true…)

Try pointing out that the bankers who got us into this fine mess, (who sold mortgages to people with the full knowledge that those people would default, who bleated about the evils of the nanny state even after getting bailouts) never went to jail, and took no “responsibility” for their actions.

A look of confusion and distaste, and the subject will be changed…

“You are responsible for the predictable consequences of your actions” Anon (probably some obscure pseudo-academic)
