Time to retire the goddam Titanic Metaphor

If the ship has hit the iceberg, there’s no longer any point petitioning the captain to slow down.

If the ship has hit the iceberg, you try to find something that will float, and if you’re particularly noble you try to enforce the women and children first rule (though there is, naturlich, a class element to this…)

But all that is based on there being another ships nearby, which will arrive promptly with blankets and hot food and take you to New York.

We are a very very long way from any other habitable planets. We are on our own. The Titanic metaphor, therefore, is no help to us.
