Footloose capital skips from place to place. It goes where the best opportunities for profit are – the best mix of state subsidy, docile workers (skilled or unskilled), access to raw materials etc.
This we decry as irresponsible, short-term, selfish.
Footloose activism skip from “issue” to “issue.” It goes where the best opportunities for adrenaline, attention and affiliation are. Opposing the War (whichever one), The Cuts, Climate; where the cameras are, where the “comrades” are. This we do not decry as irresponsible, short-term, selfish. But it is.
To even be in the game, let alone win, we need to have the same long-term investment, flexibility, market-imposed discipline and creativity that capitalism (on its good days) displays.
