TV Review: “Covert Affairs” – mesmerisingly bad

Think a demented mash-up of Sex and the City and the first Die Hard film, with the outtakes of the American re-make of Nikita thrown in for the lulz. I watched this episode of yet another example of the Fascist Aesthetic because the plot involved “eco-terrrorists” holding oil company executives hostage in Mexico City. And guess what. 1) Time does that timey-wimey bendy thing letting our heroine go from rock-climbing to Washington to Mexico City all in a couple of hours. And – are you sitting down – it turns out the baddies are actually just interested in money. Well, that was a twist I didn’t see. Oh, and the oil executive had organised the whole thing. Wow, what a devious devious set of script writers they have for this haunting portrayal of the grey loneliness of policing the declining American Imperium.

Ok, I feel VERY unclean that I watched that, and for a minute wanted to go all Oedipus (“when he saw what he had done, he tore his eyes out, one by one, a tragic end to a loyal son, who loved his mother”). Instead I wrote this, as my penance. Hail Mary, mother of grace…

TV Review: Gruen TransferPanel show where advertising execs dissect campaigns and judge two efforts in a contest suggested by the audience (tonight, bottled oxygen). Yes, anything that can get people reflecting on the means used to trick them has got to be a Good Thing (insert tedious statement about “repressive tolerance/informational hormesis/limited hang out” here).

    American Fascist Aesthetic: Dodge automobiles, Batman, Rudy Giuliani, POW/MIA flags on public buildings, the list goes on.

    Then there’s classic Fascist-American: New England’s State Trooper Uniforms inspired out of admiration for Mussolini and a love of patent leather.
