When you’re in a coal hole, keep digging

Yep, China world leader in renewables blah blah. And this, though a prediction, gives one pause for thought…

China’s coal imports may jump 60 per cent in 2011 on strong demand from power plants, said UOB Kay Hian.
China’s overseas coal purchases may rise to 265 million metric tons from an estimated 166 million tonnes this year, Helen Lau, a Hong Kong-based coal analyst at the brokerage, said in an emailed note yesterday.

But then, given their rural population’s flight to the cities (driven in part by environmental degradation and corrupt land-grabs by Communist party officials), they have to grow their economy at 8% a year just to stand still (Red Queen and all that). And Australia stays rich by flogging that coal, and other stuff…
