Abba, anomie and apocalypse

The song starts out thus -

I was at a party and this fella said to me
“Something bad is happening, I’m sure you do agree
People care for nothing, no respect for human rights
Evil times are coming, we are in for darker nights”
I said, “Who are you to talk about impending doom?”
He got kinda wary as he looked around the room
He said, “I’m a minister, a big shot in the state”
I said, “I just can’t believe it, boy I think it’s great
Brother can you tell me what is right and what is wrong?”
He said, “Keep on rocking baby, ’til the night is gone”

So, the State knows what is coming.  But then, a tolerably intelligent eight-year-old has probably clocked by now that their parents and other authority figures are not actually grown-ups at all.  That there are no grown-ups where it matters. There are people in office, but not in charge.  There are servants of a deadly rapacious and not-so-ultimately self-destructive system.  There are schmoozers and hucksters and bullshit artists. Some of them even subscribe to this blog.  But adults? Not so much.

And what is to be done?  Keep on shopping. No, wait, rocking.

And yes, things have always been falling apart. The West has loved its narratives of decline. And the whole “Fall of Rome” thing is indeed probably tied up with that monkey Gibbon.

But things are different this time round.  We’ve had a two-hundred year binge on fossil fuels.  We have ramped up our numbers, we have depleted the soils, we have hacked to pieces the very biological diversity on which we are too ignorant to realise we depend, we have depleted our localised resilience.  A hard rain is gonna fall.

“Billy Bragg, boredom and belligerence” “Creedence Clearwater Revival, callousness and creativity” etc etc.
